WAT TRAIMIT WITHAYARAM
Temple where you can admire the Sukhothai-era golden Buddha, the world's largest, weighing 5 tons, on display on the floor.
Home to the world's largest golden Buddha (Phra Maha Mondop), weighing in at 5 tonnes. This Buddha was discovered by chance in 1953, when it was being lifted by crane from a storage room to the chapel. The Buddha slipped, the stucco covering cracked, and a magnificent gold statue from the Sukhothai period was discovered, which the kings of Ayutthaya had concealed from the Burmese. An exhibition on the3rd floor of the palace traces and explains this history and the origin of the Golden Buddha.
