MONUMENTAL VICTORY
A military monument in Bangkok, built in 1941 to commemorate the Thai victory over the French.
This military monument was built in 1941. It commemorates a Thai victory over the French. Thailand had succeeded in annexing parts of Cambodia and Laos, territories that had previously been ceded to France. The story doesn't end there, however, and becomes embarrassing at the end of the Second World War, when Thailand is obliged to return the territories to France. The monument, consisting of an obelisk and statues of soldiers, doesn't celebrate anything very glorious, but it's still there!
