PHRA PATHOM CHEDI
A chedi renowned for its age and monumental architecture, revered by Buddhists the world over.
Standing 127 m high, this chedi is revered by Buddhists the world over for its antiquity (written records mention it in 675, but some archaeologists claim construction began in 193 BC) and for its monumental architecture. It is said to be the oldest Buddhist structure in the country. In the 11th century, the temple was taken over by the Khmers, who modified its configuration. Abandoned, it was not rebuilt until the 19th century, at the request of King Mongkut, who decided to build on the ruins of the old temple.
