PHRA MAE YA SHRINE
A shrine housing an idol of Phra Mae Ya, built during the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng as a tribute to his late mother.
It houses an idol of Phra Mae Ya, a stone figure with a white face and long hair, dressed like an ancient queen. The idol is about 1 metre high. It is believed to have been built during the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng as a tribute to his late mother, Nang Suang. The shrine is highly respected by Sukhothai residents, who also believe that it houses the spirit of King Ramkhamhaeng. Not to be confused with Wat Tham Phra Mae Ya, a cave temple in Na Choeng Khiri, 30 km west of Sukhothai.
