WAT PHRA CHAO MENGRAI
A small temple in Chiang Mai, housing a statue of King Mengrai, the country's first historical figure.
This small temple, completely renovated in recent years, is not impressive but its historical dimension is of particular importance for the city. This monument is dedicated to the country's first historical figure, King Mengrai, whose statue stands proudly in the complex. Originally from a Thai family in Yunnan, he gave Chiang Rai an independent status in 1263 and founded the capital Chiang Mai a few years later. He died of lightning but gave birth to the kingdom of Lanna, which was to last 250 years.
