WAT PHRA THAT HARIPHUNCHAI
A chedi designed to preserve a relic of Buddha's hair, distinguished by its unusual pyramidal structure...
Its origins date back to the 9th century, when King Haripunchai decided to build a chedi to preserve a relic of Buddha's hair. The 46-metre-high chedi has an unusual pyramidal structure. The temple itself dates back to the 11th century. It was rebuilt in the 15th century by Tilokaraja, King of Lanna. The viharn houses a Buddha statue from the Lanna period, as well as an imposing bronze gong dating from 1860, said to be the largest in the world.
