KHAO YAI NATIONAL PARK
A park less than 3 hours' drive from Bangkok, home to over 70 mammals and 2,000 species of plants and trees.
This superb national park, the country's most visited, is less than three hours' drive from Bangkok. It covers an area of 2,168 km² and straddles four provinces: Nakhon Ratchasima, Saraburi, Prachinburi and Nakhon Nayok. It is part of the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai forest complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its flora comprises over two thousand species of plants and trees. It is also home to over 70 mammals, including elephants, bears, muntjacs, porcupines, bats, several species of snakes and monkeys such as gibbons and macaques... as well as a few rare felines. The park is also home to the country's largest population of hornbills.
Most of these animals are best seen during the rainy season from June to October. It's also during this time of year that the waterfalls are at their most beautiful. But to see hornbills, the best time would be from January to May.
The Visitor Centre offers information and refreshments. Numerous waterfalls, viewpoints , observation towers and even two campsites can be found on site. There are also trails for exploring the jungle on foot.
It is advisable to take a guide or take part in an organized excursion to visit it, as the park is vast.
The park is only open during the day to keep the crowds down, which is good for the many species of animal that call this area home.
