WAT PHO CHAI
An important temple with captivating murals depicting Buddhist and Hindu episodes.
This is the city's largest and most important temple. It is famous for its three Buddhas, originally from Vientiane, but it is above all the bronze Buddha, called Luang Phor Phra Sai, with its solid gold head and ruby-set cap, that attracts attention. The murals, which depict Buddhist and Hindu episodes, are particularly striking. The invasion of Laos by the Kingdom of Siam is one of the major themes of these frescoes. More recent paintings featuring King Bhumibol can also be admired.
