AO MANAO
A bay steeped in history, home to a superb beach and facilities such as restaurants, snack bars, showers, deckchairs...
The bay of Ao Manao shelters a superb beach, ideal for swimming. To get there you have to go through the road leading to the military base. Several facilities are present: restaurants, snack bars, showers, toilets as well as tables, deckchairs and umbrellas all along the beach. You have to pay a very small fee to be able to sit on one of the deckchairs or chairs on site, but it is also possible to sit on the sand with your towel. The bay is very wide and it is spotless: the soldiers of the base clean it every day. On weekends, there are a lot of people on the beach, and for good reason: it is one of the favourite destinations of the inhabitants of Bangkok. It is also a historical site for the country: on December 8, 1941, it was at Ao Manao that the Japanese attempted to invade the city and subdue the Fifth Thai Air Force, based in its HQ, the Wing 5. The latter resisted until an armistice was signed between the two countries the following day. The Wing 5 is also open to visitors: it has a museum and several commemorative sculptures. This military base is still active. In order to be able to visit the place you will have to leave your passports at the entrance and pick them up at the exit. Another attraction: the site's hill is beautiful and is home to many langurs with glasses, especially visible in the early morning and late afternoon. And, if you're lucky, you might be able to spot a baby langur, whose particularity is its colour... canary yellow!
