KHAO LUANG NATIONAL PARK
A 570 km² national park, popular with animals such as macaques, tapirs, elephants and tigers...
This national park covers some 570 km². The park takes its name from Mount Khao Luang, which rises to 1,780 m and is the highest peak in the south of the country. The landscape features mountains, limestone cliffs, granite massifs, forests and a number of rivers. With its many fruit plantations, the park is a veritable animal sanctuary. It is frequented by a wide variety of animals: macaques, tapirs, elephants, but also - less commonly - leopards and tigers. Indeed, these felines still roam the area, protected from poaching by forest rangers. Certain waterfalls can be explored on well-marked trails with rest areas. The best time to visit the park is from January to June. In addition to large mammals, many bird and plant species can be found here.
Transport to the park. From Nakhon Si Thammarat, song téo buses provide a 45-minute connection to the village of Khiri Wong, at the entrance to the park.
Accommodation. Bungalows can accommodate from 6 to 12 guests. Comfort is rustic, but this national park has a special charm and is well worth a stop to "recharge your batteries". You can also camp by the roadside.
Visit. The national park is still inhabited by farmers. Some of them can act as guides. They know the area inside out, and their help is invaluable when it comes to spotting wild animals. Contact the Ecotourism Club in Khiri Wong.
