GHOST MASK MUSEUM
One of the sights of the city! To get there, you have to walk along the Shuqi road, which is part of the old streets of Jiufen; at the bend of a staircase, this unusual place appears. Often featured in television programmes, this small and atypical museum offers an astonishing collection of terracotta masks supposed to represent the most frightening and amusing ghosts. The artist (a former cook turned sculptor who himself visits the place on certain days of the week, with his brother acting as a relay), and who calls himself "Wu the man of the earth", is a very sympathetic eccentric who pretends to dream of ghosts every night, and represents them so as to no longer be haunted by their presence. In total, he has created more than a thousand different masks that took him twenty years to create, from the smoking ghost (with a face full of cigarettes) to the laughing ghost (with a deformed jaw), not forgetting a few caricatures of local politicians, these are unusual characters that haunt the place. Enough to give nightmares to the most sensitive souls! Please note that if the masks are not for sale, it is possible to buy them for about NT$10,000 upon request, and after hard negotiations. Alternatively, a deck of cards on sale throughout Jiufen (and especially in the museum) for NT$ 50 offers the most unusual ones in the collection. Not to be missed during any stay in Jiufen!
