During the Second World War, the Japanese forcibly conscripted over 1,000 soldiers, most of them British, to work in the gold mines. The treatment was inhumanly cruel. If they didn't bring back gold after a hard day's work, they were deprived of meals. Needless to say, many did not survive such treatment. Some were secretly fed by Taiwanese miners, who took pity on them. A poignant memorial pays tribute to them today on this site.
