COLD-WATER SPRINGS
Discovered in 1928, these springs stand out in Taiwan. Not only are they cold (22°C), they are also gaseous (CO2). Along with others in Italy, they are the only ones of their kind in the world. The outdoor communal bath, with its slightly retro feel, boasts a splendid view of Seven Star Mountain, which can be climbed on two trails (one half-hour and the other an hour and a half) from the cold springs, frequented mainly by the elderly and children.
The first few minutes of immersion are refreshing to say the least, but the body gets used to them and the experience becomes enjoyable. Of course, they're rarely used in winter, but a few die-hards don't hesitate to take a dip when the mercury dips below 20°C: the water in the springs can be warmer than outside. At the entrance to the establishment, a fountain allows you to sample the spring water, which not only cures skin diseases and diabetes externally, but also heals intestinal pain orally.
If you arrive outside opening hours, or don't wish to pay, you should know that by pushing to the left for around 500 m, you can access the open-air springs directly, and free of charge. This is where the people of Suao come to cool off in summer. You can also enjoy the surrounding scenery while bathing in this unique spring, which also attracts photo enthusiasts for its magnificent panoramas.
