While the other temples dedicated to the sage on the island are of Ming or Qing architecture, this one stands out from the crowd as it features the extremely rare Song style. Built in 1976, it is imposing and highly colorful. Next door, on Li-Hsing Street, the Martyrs' Mausoleum is a classical Chinese palace that pays homage to 72 Chinese patriots beheaded on the orders of a Manchu court in 1911. The republican revolution had just begun on the mainland.
