Built in 1726 during the Qing Dynasty, this very famous and still very active temple is dedicated to Matsu. Its structure, inspired by Japanese temples, was badly damaged by a fire following the 1999 earthquake and it took $48 million to restore it to its original state. To prevent history from repeating itself, it is now forbidden to light candles within the sanctuary. To see the temple illuminated and admire the play of lights created by the architecture, it is necessary to attend a religious ceremony.
