To the northwest of the temple of Confucius, the temple of Paochue, built in 1926, has a 31 m high statue of Buddha. A few years ago, the temple was mainly frequented by Japanese veterans of World War II or survivors of the Chinese civil wars. This may be explained by the success of this Buddhist sect in the land of the rising sun. But it is also likely that these soldiers came there in search of spiritual peace. The bells of the shrine come from elsewhere in Japan.
