Île Verte was so named in 1949, it was called before Île du Feu because of the fires that the locals maintained on the shore to prevent boats from running aground on the coral reefs. This system failed in 1937 when an American ship, the President Hoover, sank when it struck the island's shores. The 33 m high lighthouse was built three years later. Located in the very north of the island, the lighthouse is close to the airport, so the place not only has a beautiful view of the sea but also of the planes landing.
