The island has three prisons, only one of which is open to the public. This is Green Island Lodge (in the village of Gongguan), which served as a detention center for opponents of the regime until martial law was lifted. Within the prison walls, where you can still visit the small cells, stands the Green Island Human Rights Memorial, on which are marked all the names of former inmates. A museum reveals the harsh conditions of imprisonment, the abuses suffered and, above all, stresses the extreme necessity of living in a democracy.
