In the village of Peinan, some 5 km from Taitung, was discovered in 1980 by workers building the railway station, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Taiwan. After digging up 1,500 coffins and 20,000 stone and pottery tools, researchers concluded that this was a Neolithic site, inhabited by the Peinan tribe. The site can be visited, but most of the pieces are in the Archaeological Museum.
