The village of Beishan, attacked by communist troops in 1949, has preserved a partly destroyed Western-style building, which bears witness to the fighting. The building is now surrounded by a wall, and a commemorative plaque was installed there in 1986. The owners have renovated one of the adjacent buildings to create a small, inexpensive hotel, which is a very good place to stay in the north of the island. Ideal for history buffs.
