KENWYN HOUSE
An address to discover the local architecture, which serves as a showcase for South African diamonds.
Here is a real little jewel of the capital! Full of history and elegance, this address is a must in Victoria to discover the local architecture. While the French colonial Creole houses are left abandoned and end up collapsing under time and humidity, a visit to Kenwyn House is worthwhile firstly because it allows the tourist to finally enter an old Seychelles house that has been admirably restored. Crossing the gate of the charming garden, climbing the steps of the delicate double-revolution staircase made of takamaka wood, gliding over the old parquet floors, climbing majestically upstairs really gives the impression of going back in time, to the time of the colonists... This beautiful house, nestled in a pocket garden near the centre of Mahé, in the most famous street of the capital, Francis Rachel Street, opposite the National Library, dates back to 1855. It was then the property of Dr. James Henry Brooks, Chief Surgeon and Consul of Germany (1858-1879). Today, Kenwyn House is used as a showcase for the South African diamond. There are also jewels combining shells, silver and mother-of-pearl, and exuberant colourful necklaces popular with Russians and South Africans. All this debauchery of jewellery is all the more tempting because here all prices are duty-free! And for smaller budgets, banana wood bracelets or necklaces will do the trick.
