ST. LOUIS CHURCH
Oranese church built by the Spanish and rebuilt by the French, now home to a small cultural center.
This is the oldest church in Oran. It was built by the Spanish after the capture of Oran (1509) on the site of a former mosque. It was badly damaged by the earthquake of 1790. It wasn't until 1831 that the French rebuilt it (along with the Sacré-Coeur cathedral), giving it its current Romanesque appearance. It was Oran's cathedral until 1913, when it was decommissioned following the construction of the Sacré-Coeur cathedral. It once housed a small cultural center, but is now unoccupied and dilapidated.
