One of Oran's oldest mosques, it was built in 1791 by the Bey Mohamed el Kebir. Because of its location, not far from the seafront to the east of the city, and wedged between buildings, it was almost destroyed several times. After various military uses, it was returned to religious use in 1893 and listed as a historic monument, allowing the building with its hieratic minaret to be preserved. It was restored for the first time in 1930 and several times in recent years, changing its original appearance.
