The M'dina Jdida district is home to the largest number of mosques, most of which were built in the late 19th or early 20th century, as it was the main Muslim quarter during the French period.
Among the best-known are the Cherifia, Bennacef, Alaouia, Teyeb el M'hadji, Madrassat le Falah and Cheikh Benkabou mosques. The latter houses the tombs of Sheikh Benkabou and Caïda H'lima, who financed the mosque's construction in the 1920s.
