DONJONS
Guard towers known as "red dungeons" built during the Merinid period under the reign of Abu el-Hassen.
Known as Bordj-Al-Mahal (Fort of the storks), Bordj Al-Ahmar (Red castle), Bordj Al-Djadid (The new fort), the dungeons - known as red dungeons - are three large guard towers, built in 1347, during the Merinid period, under the reign of Abu el Hassen. The city was not very large and the fortifications were used to watch over the plateau of Karguentah from where an attack could come. However, their architecture has given rise to certain hypotheses, one of which evokes a possible link with the knights of the Order of Malta.
