ROZALCASAR FORTRESS
Fortification in Oran comprising long, high walls, ditches, glacis and tunnels linking up with other forts.
Oran's main fortification, built in the 14th century and modified by the Spanish between 1509 and 1792. It was the residence of the Dey under the Ottomans, then the headquarters of the general commanding the Oran division during the French occupation. Its walls, pits and tunnels connect it to the other forts and the citadel, offering views of the port, the old town and the hinterland. On the east side of the great wall is the coat of arms of King Philip V, which also bears the date 1701.
