OLD SYNAGOGUE
This former synagogue converted into a mosque in Oran is the largest and most beautiful in Africa.
Inaugurated in 1918, it is the largest and most beautiful synagogue in Africa. It has been converted into a mosque and bears the name of Abdullah Ibn Salam Ibn Al-Harith (a rabbi who converted to Islam and was one of the Prophet Mohammed's companions). This former synagogue stands opposite the old Jewish quarter, the Derb district, which is now in a state of disrepair. Oran was home to one of Algeria's largest Jewish communities. Until independence in 1962, it had a temple, ten synagogues, two religious schools and a cemetery.
