Sainte-Marie Cathedral houses the remains of Bishop Pierre Claverie, who was murdered there on August1, 1996, during the black decade. Near his tomb, you can see the photo of Mohamed Bouchikhi, a Muslim friend who was murdered with him as he brought him home from the airport; he lies in the Sidi Bel Abbès cemetery.
