The Koubba and adjoining mosque were built in 1799, at the request of Bey Mohamed Ben Othman El Kebir, who wished to honor the memory of the neighborhood's eponymous saint, the town's patron saint. Opposite the Koubba (funerary monument) stands the first El-Alaouia zawiya. The Tariqa El-Alaouia is a Sufi brotherhood distinguished by its modern interpretation of Islam and open-mindedness. It was founded in 1920 by Sheikh Ben Alioua.
