TOMB OF RABBI EPHRAIM ENKAOUA
Stone-marked grave installed in the Jewish cemetery in Tlemcen to pay tribute to Rabbi Éphraïm Enkaoua.
Fleeing persecution of Jews in Spain, Ephraim's parents settled in Tlemcen in 1391, where the Jewish community was already sizeable. After receiving medical training, the young man made a name for himself through his piety, and succeeded in bringing together the Jews scattered throughout the region in the center of Tlemcen. On his death in 1442, the grateful community had a tomb built for him in the Jewish cemetery. The tomb, marked by stones, is a place of pilgrimage.
