If there's one place known to locals and holidaymakers in search of a refreshing treat, it's Ali Kenniche's ice-cream stand. Open since 1931, it's a fixture in downtown Béjaïa. Popular at weekends and throughout the summer for its créponné - a lemon sorbet, a pied-noir speciality - and its garantita - another Algerian speciality, a kind of chick-pea flan that is mainly eaten hot - which rivals the best in Oran, this snack is ideal for munchies at any time of day.
