HASSAN BEY MOSQUE
Mosque built under the reign of Bey Hussein Bou Koumia in Constantine, which welcomed Catholic worship in 1838.
Begun in 1703 under the reign of Bey Hussein Bou Koumia, construction was completed in 1730, and the mosque was converted to Catholic worship in 1838 under the name Notre-Dame-des-Sept-Douleurs. It borders the Place du Commandant Si Houas and the bey's palace. Its enlarged dome was inspired by the Florence dome. When the first parish priest, Abbé Suchet, was appointed here, the Muslim Constantinians presented him with a splendid carved wooden pulpit. Also known as "Souk El-Ghezal", in reference to the nearby "wool market".
