FRATERNITY
A fraternity surrounded by clay walls in a small oasis welcoming pilgrims in search of peace of mind.
In the autumn of 1901, Charles de Foucauld, ordained a priest, chose this small oasis just outside Béni-Abbès to build a hermitage where, he hoped, other aspirants to meditation would join him. He lived there for four years before leaving for the Hoggar. The fraternity, set back from the town and surrounded by a clay wall, was restored in 1935. The priests who live there receive their brothers and, occasionally, pilgrims who come to seek peace of mind by staying on site. The Hermitage is closed to pilgrims in summer.
