PETRIFIED WOOD AND TIDIKELT PLAIN
The In Salah forest, one of the world's most important deposits, is home to trees petrified by drought.
West of In Salah, on the road to Reggane, at the beginning of the Tidikelt plain, in what is known as the "palm of the hand", this "forest" of trees petrified by drought is difficult to visit because it is located in a military zone. A pity, because it's one of the world's most important deposits. As for the Tidikelt itself, it too is a complete desert between In Salah and Reggane. Only Aoulef and the Akabli oasis offer a break from this vast expanse of sand.
