When the snow's right, you can ski 10 km from Sofia at the Vitosha/Aleko ski resort. This resort offers over 20 km of downhill slopes, from an altitude of 1,650 m to the summit of Vitosha mountain, Cherny Vrah (2,290 m), the country's fourth highest peak. From Sofia, take streetcar 9 on Hristo-Botev Boulevard and get off at the terminus. From here, get off at the Hladilnika stop and take either bus 66 (every quarter-hour) to the Aleko chairlift, or bus 123 to Simeonovo, from where a gondola takes you up to the resort.
