The Banya Bachi mosque, built in 1567, is Sofia's largest and most beautiful.
Built in 1567 by the architect Hadji Mimar Sinan, who was also the architect of Sultan Selim's mosque in Edirne, Banya Bachi is Sofia's largest and most beautiful mosque, and the only one where prayers can be heard five times a day. As the interior can only accommodate 500 people, it's not uncommon to see worshippers praying on the sidewalk during major festivals. One of Europe's oldest mosques, its name means "many baths" in Turkish.
