This monument was the first to be built under the Free Kingdom of Bulgaria.
This tall (13 m) square column inlaid with ornaments, inaugurated on 22 October 1895 at the place where he was hanged, pays homage to Vasil Levski, a hero of the War of National Liberation who died in 1873. It is made of grey Balkan granite and bronze. The Vassil Levski monument was the first to be built under the Free Kingdom of Bulgaria. At that time it was not located in present-day Sofia. Every year on February 19, people come here to pay their respects.

Le monument en lui-même n'est pas très impressionnant, mais quand l'on sait à qui il rend hommage, il prend tout de suite de l'ampleur. Vasil Levski est une véritable icône dans son pays.
