VASSIL LEVSKI MONUMENT (ЛЕВСКИ ВАСИЛ НА ВАСИЛ)
This monument was the first to be built under the Free Kingdom of Bulgaria.
This tall (13 m), square, ornamentally inlaid column, inaugurated on October 22, 1895 on the spot where he was hanged, pays tribute to Vassil Levski, a hero of the war of national liberation who died in 1873. It is made of grey Balkan granite and bronze. The Vassil Levski monument was the first to be built under the Free Kingdom of Bulgaria. At that time, it was not located in present-day Sofia. It is visited every year on February 19.
