ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
Museum presenting the richest collection of archaeological objects from the Balkan peninsula.
The Museum of Archaeology was inaugurated in 1879 in a former 15th-century Ottoman mosque, a magnificent building that once housed a library. It boasts the richest collection of archaeological artefacts on the Balkan peninsula. Paleolithic remains are on display, including tools, weapons including a flint spear, everyday objects including ceramics, and animal bones bearing witness to the presence of cave bears and saber-toothed lions. Don't miss the oldest stone drawing in Europe, dated 50,000 years ago, or the oldest engraved bone fragment, over a million years old. The treasure room, on the top floor, houses Thracian deposits of worldwide importance - the thirteen-piece gold treasure of Valtchitran (Pleven), the silver harness of Loukovit (Lovetch), the gold jewels and silver objects of Nikolaevo (Pleven). There is also a numismatic collection totalling over 150,000 Thracian, Greek and Roman coins. The museum also houses a room dedicated to the Middle Ages, focusing on the Bulgarian kingdoms. A copy of Madara's Horseman is on display. This is the only copy in the museum, all other objects being originals. You can also see a collection of jewelry that belonged to members of the Bulgarian nobility, ceramics of daily life and weapons. The Sofia Museum of Archaeology also has a scientific research section.
