FORTRESS BABA VIDA (БАБА ВИДА)
Facing the Danube, this is Bulgaria's best-preserved and largest medieval fortress.
A real jewel on its hill! This is the best-preserved and largest medieval fortress. Founded in the 10th century, enlarged and fortified in the 13th and 14th centuries, it was occupied by the Bulgars, Ottomans and then briefly by the Habsburgs in the 16th century. An important strategic base facing the Danube, it was the seat of the last Vidin tsar, Ivan Sratsimir. In 1958, a museum was opened here. In summer, Baba Vida plays host to local open-air theater.
