The fortress was destroyed by the Ottomans in the century, and all that remains today is a poorly restored field of ruins.
The Thracians were the first to erect fortifications here, but the visible ruins date from the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, as do the surrounding houses, most of which date from the 14th century. The fortress of Choumen was destroyed in the 14th century by the Ottomans, and only a field of ruins remains today, poorly restored. It can be reached by taxi at little cost; the view from the plateau is a breathtaking passage which is the highlight of the visit.
