The Byzantine monastery of St. John the Baptist the Precursor, the center of Christianity in the Rhodopes, was built between the 6th and 8th centuries and subsequently ruined. In 1998, the tomb of a Byzantine archbishop was discovered on the excavated site, and major renovation work was carried out. First opened to the public as a religious museum in 2000, the renovated church was reopened for worship under the direction of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church in 2009. Photos of the exterior.
