PIRIN NATIONAL PARK (НАЦИОНАЛЕН ПИРИН НАЦИОНАЛЕН)
A natural park criss-crossed by numerous well-marked trails that delight hikers of all levels.
Covering an area of more than 4,000 hectares, this nature park, created in 1963 and gradually expanded, is crisscrossed by numerous well-marked trails that are a joy for hikers of all levels. A network of 13 major trails and 17 secondary trails connect 8 chalets and 5 refuges.
The fauna and flora are particularly rich and varied: there are nearly 1,300 plant species, 50 of which are found only in Bulgaria, and more than 2,300 animal species, most of which belong to the invertebrate family. Among the vertebrates (about 170 species), many species are rare and protected, including the brown bear, the wolf and the chamois. You can also observe foxes, eagles, wild goats, deer, wild cats, etc. In 1983, the Pirin Park was registered by Unesco as a world heritage site. In addition, the geography of the park is particularly rich and varied: majestic rocky peaks, three of which are above 2,900 m, 176 natural lakes, and numerous rivers and springs that flow into the green valleys.
Vihren Peak (2,914 m) , the highest peak in the park (the second highest in Bulgaria), is visible from many vantage points, but can be climbed. Some hotels offer guided tours, but it is also possible to go there alone. The small village of Vihren, at the end of the road (signposted from Bansko) is the best starting point for hikes. There is a parking lot and some buses or minibuses connect to Bansko.
In addition to many natural species, Pirin National Park is home to historical monuments, century-old trees, a wide variety of minerals, glaciers, emerald blue lakes, pure water rivers... However, these beautiful landscapes and its great biodiversity are still threatened, especially with regard to the old-growth forests, by the construction of new trails, a ski lift and a new road inside the park. This disregard for nature protection laws is creating protests from Bulgarians against the government and profit-seeking developers. Fortunately, a successful action was taken in 2019 by environmentalists in partnership with the WWF to block a new extension of the Bansko ski resort. Nature has won for how much longer? Vigilance remains necessary..
