HELLENIC REMAINS
A beautiful, well-preserved and very interesting site where you can immerse yourself in the past of the town of Petritch.
5 km to the north-east of Petritch are the remains of the Greek town of Heraclea Sintica, a small ancient city founded around the 4th century and later destroyed by a powerful earthquake. However, the city walls and foundations of public buildings are still visible. Coins dating back to the 4th-3rd centuries BC have also been unearthed. The site has recently been in the news. In July 2024, archaeologists made the exceptional discovery of a well-preserved marble statue of Hermes, over 2 m high.
