SAINT-JEAN'S CHURCH

A church with remarkable paintings, ornamentation and other harmonies of color.
This Romanesque church was built in the 12th century in this pretty village in Auvergne's Tuscany region. The local stone, arkose, gives it a warm feel. The vaulted choir is a kind of prototype for Auvergne chevets. The choir's capitals are adorned with foliage or figures, such as a mermaid or an atlantean. A painting depicting Christ surrounded by Mary and three saints was discovered at a late date. In general, the paintings, ornaments and other harmonies of color are remarkable, with alternating black, white, red and orange tones.
