SAINT-JEAN'S CHURCH

A church with remarkable paintings, ornamentation and other harmonies of color.
This Romanesque church was built in the 12th century in this pretty village in Auvergne's Tuscany region. Constructed from arkose, a local stone with warm hues, it exudes a unique atmosphere. The vaulted choir is a prototype for Auvergne chevets. Its capitals are adorned with foliage or figures, such as a mermaid or an atlantean. A late-discovered painting depicts Christ surrounded by Mary and three saints. Generally speaking, the ensemble of paintings, ornaments and colors, alternating black, white, red and orange, is particularly remarkable.
