The building was originally built for the city's German theatre in 1910. It was designed in the National Romantic-Art Nouveau style by the Russian architects Vasilyev and Bubyr. Now it is one of the largest and oldest theatres in the country. It has a permanent cast of thirty-seven actors and three directors. Naturally, the plays are mostly performed in Estonian, with a dozen new works.
