On the road between Tallinn and Narva is Rebala, a protected area containing no fewer than 300 archaeological, historical and natural sites. It is possible to access the premises, explore local history and nature by car, bike or foot, simply following the trails. The best to start his visit is to start with the Reserve Museum in Jœlähtme.
It has collections of objects found in the various excavations carried out on the reserve. One of the most remarkable pieces is the bronze age graves. Among other specific features, it is possible to discover the fortifications of Jägala, the largest of Estonia (2,8 ha), dating from the 1922 th century, still intact despite significant damage and the construction of a hydroelectric dam in, intended to feed a cardboard plant. The village of Rebala is also a picturesque stopover for those who want to discover a typical Estonian village and unchanged for centuries. The beautiful neo-Gothic Church of Jœlähtme, rebuilt in 1878, dates back to a much longer period of 1220. The chapel of Saha is one of the first constructions linked to Christianity in Estonia. If the date of its construction is unknown, it is known that the building burned in 1223 and the current chapel were built much later in the th century. Its architecture attests to its utility, fortifications that helped protect itself from enemy attacks and offered a quiet stop to pilgrims. The sites were restored and rehabilitated during the 1970 s. Don't miss the rocks of Fertility, the originality of the reserve that has a hundred rocks to the dug and sculpted cavities whose tradition dates back to the first millennium B.C. This tradition is linked to a belief in fertility, and any woman wishing to be pregnant should slide on the buttocks along the rock! Finally, don't miss the Cascades waterfalls and the Manoir manor house.
Since 10 February 1998, a charter and the delimitation of the Rebala reserve are approved by decree by the Estonian Government.
