Small cliffs in Põlva, once used for sacrifices to the gods to protect harvests.
If you've got the car and the time, the Taevaskoja cliffs are well worth a detour. Just 6 km from the village of Põlva, you can hike to the small cliffs of Taevaskoja, through a pretty fir forest, along the Ahja River. The name of the cliffs translates as "Hall of Heaven", and comes from the large sandstone walls that have formed with the river over the centuries. In ancient times, many sacrifices were made here, for the gods to protect the crops.
