This small museum traces the town's history, from the archaeological remains found in the area to the propaganda images and military weapons of the Second World War. Founded in 1878 during the first excavations of the castle ruins. The first floor is dedicated to the town's ancient history. The second floor is devoted to the history of the Estonian countryside from the time of the Tsars to the end of the Soviet era. Like Tartu, Viljandi was, at the end of the 19th century, the cradle of the national revival that preceded independence.
