This gateway was originally used to ensure the triumphant arrival of VIPs from Tallinn.
This is the only preserved 17th-century gate in the Baltic States. It was built by the Swedes and originally called the Carl Gustav Gate, after the Swedish king, but was named Tallinn Gate after the Swedish army's defeat by the Russians. The architect was undoubtedly Erik Dahlberg, who also built the Narva and Riga gates. The gate was originally intended to ensure the triumphant arrival of VIPs from Tallinn.
